Super wood stronger steel, able to stop a sprinting bullet emerges by an uncomplicated and reasonable novel procedure can modify any type of wood into a substance stronger than steel and even some high-tech titanium alloys. Apart from apprehending a star turn in buildings and vehicles, the material could even be utilized to assemble bullet impenetrable armor plates.
Wood is a plenty and can be incurred at a lower cost, the trees are made of wood. Since time immemorial it has been used in building furniture to homes and massive structures unprocessed wood is not robust as metals used in constructions. Researchers have been trying for quite some time now to amplify its strength, mainly by squashing and coagulating it says Liangbing Hu, a materials scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park. But coagulated wood can become weak and jolt back into its original size especially when it is humid.
Now, Hu and his colleagues simply follow the two step procedure to coagulate wood. They boil the wood in a solution of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), a chemical consideration. This method is same to the first step in creating the wood pulp used to make paper.
This partially removes lignin and hemicellulose (natural polymers that help stiffen a plant’s cell walls)—but it largely leaves the wood’s cellulose (another natural polymer) intact, Hu says. The second step is as simple as the first one: cramming the treated wood until its cell wall subsides, and then preserving that compression as it is non-abrasively heated. The pressure and heat combined force the formation of chemical bonds between huge numbers of hydrogen atoms along with the neighboring atoms in adjoining nano fibers of cellulose vastly making the material robust.
